On Seniors...

Rosie2

From her Foster Mom

Ladies -
If the rescue is ok with it we
’d like to make Rosie (2) a permanent addition to our home.  My daughter and this dog have become incredibly attached to each other over the past month or so, I’ve never seen anything like it before.  We’ve had our share of fosters for most of Maeve’s life and she’s fallen in love with all of them to some degree but with Rosie it’s like something out of a book, they’re inseparable.

I know that Rose came from a home with kids, maybe girls, who knows, but watching the two of them is amazing.  I can’t imagine taking this dog away from her.

We understand if you’re working on a home for her and we’ve given this a lot of thought, we certainly weren’t looking for another dog.  I just can’t picture what it would be like for either one of them if she had to move on.

Update - 05/04/06 - Romeo (NY) aka Eddy

Eddy's favorite times of the day were meal times!  Eddy galloped over to a slightly larger than usual dinner tonight, finished it off with his usual smile, went over to his bed, laid down, and passed on.

We will miss him dearly.

Love,

Sandy

07/31/04 -

I trimmed Romeo's nails today and he acted like the old pro he is. Like it was no big deal.  Had someone in his family done this for him many times before? And all the other things he does now are the result of some care he received in his past.

So how is it that he ended up on the streets, with no ID on him?  He didn't jump a fence... He didn't bust out... He couldn't have gone far from home with his bad legs.  And he was in the local shelter for over a month.  Was he turned out by an owner who was done with him?  We'll never know what went wrong with this dog or any of the strays that end up in rescue's care.

And after some ten years of being called his real name,  he must get used to this new name, Romeo, now.  How weird do you think he thinks we are for making up this new name for him.

Has the world gone nuts, or is it just us that think it's wrong to give up a dog because he or she has gotten too old?  Romeo is a living, breathing, feeling, and thinking animal.  He probably spent his life in service to his family, guarding their home, warning them of intruders, maybe even warming their feet.  He has assumed all of these important roles in his foster home. = )

So some unlucky older dogs are lucky enough to make it into a rescue organization's care.  And others aren't.  And most end up spending the rest of their lives in their foster family's home, because they are a hard placement, and because they are so great that we fall for these gentle souls.  They are so wonderful, we loose a lot of foster homes to these guys.

And they deserve good homes and to spend the last few years of their lives in comfort and in service.  That's right... They still have a lot to give back.

So maybe you have a spot in your home and heart for a senior Boxer...  Maybe you are slowing down a bit, and want a mature companion to share your couch with.  Maybe you are as outraged as we are that so many older dogs are looking for homes.

And you will be a hero twice!  Not only to the senior that you bring into your home, but you will be responsible for giving another Boxer a second chance by opening up a foster spot.  One that is needed to temporarily home and learn about the easier, younger placements.

Please consider adopting a senior Boxer.  And please remember that adoption is forever.

A brown-eyed handsome man.. : )

After a late night or a good play with a toy : )

 hard to believe, but . . .
. . . we're celebrating pappy's "birthday" this week (he came home to us last may 17) and shame on me for not doing this sooner but he really deserves his moment in the spotlight.  this guy who was unceremoniously dumped at the cacc to be put down because he was "too old" has yet to reveal what it is he's "too old" for!  give him a toy and he turns into a puppy and the happiest boy ever and plays and plays and plays until he crashes.  then he has to have a nap!

and just look at how handsome he is (we told him he'll get his ears back in heaven).  if ever there was an example of how absolutely joyful it can be to be adopted by a senior boxer, our pappy is it.  we thought we had all the love we needed with queenie in the house, but oh boy were we wrong!  pappy is nothing but love and sweetness and he's filled an empty spot here we didn't even know we had.  and he's so funny it's ridiculous.  he's madly in love with his dog walker and acts like mr. macho man whenever she's around.  except when queenie tells him not to forget she's in charge - then he turns into mr. wimpy man!

no ordinary wiggle here either - he leaps and dances and twirls and trembles and wiggles and hoots and hollers with delight whenever anyone he loves comes in the house.  and that's really just about everyone.

he's mr. particular in your bed, too, insisting on being under your covers and he's an expert at squeezing you into a postage stamp sized corner of the bed while he sleeps comfortably stretched out and as unmovable as a slab of concrete!

did i mention he steals pillows?   he can do whatever he wants as far as we are concerned because we are so madly in love with him and he deserves to be spoiled and happy.  he holds nothing back when it comes to sharing the love.  he is the poster child for the canine elderly.  and after he's gone to reclaim his ears and wait for us at the bridge we'll be bringing home another elderboxer.

i would encourage anyone who is visiting this website because they want to adopt a boxer to please consider this - the boxer is often called the peter pan of the dog world because they never really grow up they just grow older.  and growing older is not so bad (as some of us are learning from experience).  we have some gorgeous and cuddly senior citizens here who deserve to spend their remaining years in the loving arms of a family and the comfort of a real home doing what boxers are bred to do - sleeping all day on the couch and hogging the bed at night.  and the wiggle only gets better with experience!

so please give another pappy or grandma boxer a chance.  you wont believe your luck!!!
