Events - 2007 - Stop by often to see where we'll
be: AABR will be here...
Adopt A Boxer Rescue promotes the need
for active participation of owners in the training of their dogs.
In are increasing attempt to try and prevent more dogs from becoming strays
or being surrendered due to behavior issues, AABR supports the need for
owners to become active partners in their dog's training. AABR hosts
training events from time to time in our area, and will also post other
training events that we feel will assist our efforts towards this goal.

July 12th - Broadway Barks
10! Saturday, July 12, 3:30 PM
Shubert Alley, west of Broadway btwn. 44th and 45th Sts., Manhattan
This annual fundraiser and pet adopt-athon, hosted as always by Bernadette
Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, usually draws thousands of theater fans, pet
lovers, and a whole bunch of animal-friendly Broadway stars. Best of all,
the event raises money for all the city's animal shelters and rescues like
ours, and helps out lots of homeless pets. Details on this year's Broadway
Barks are below:
Broadway Barks 10 - July
12, 2008
3:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Shubert Alley , NYC
Peters Will Sign "Broadway Barks" Prior to Broadway Barks 10 on
July 12
Two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters will autograph copies of her
best-selling children's tome, "Broadway Barks," July 12 at 12:30 PM at the
Broadhurst Theatre.
Peters' new tome
The book signing at the Broadhurst (235 West 44th Street) will precede
the tenth annual Broadway Barks! dog and cat adopt-a-thon in Shubert
Alley, which is scheduled from 3:30-6:30 PM in Shubert Alley (located
between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue).
Celebrity presentations of pets from citywide animal shelters will take
place beginning at 5:3 PM. A list of celebs taking part in the event will be
announced at a later date.
The annual adopt-a-thon was created by pals Peters and Mary Tyler Moore —
who will again co-host this year's event — to find homes for pets from city
animal shelters. In a statement Moore said, "This year we're delighted to
welcome two more shelters to our Broadway Barks family, Arf and Save Kitty,
and according to recent statistics, we learned that we are making a
difference. In 2002, the rate of euthanasia among shelter animals was at
70%. We are proud that as a result of our efforts, in 2007, the number is
down to 43%."
Peters, who adopted her dogs, Kramer and Stella, from the ASPCA and AC&C,
added, "Our work is bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer
have to euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because
of a lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping animals
when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal —
the elevation and continued welfare of animals in our society."
The adopt-a-thon will feature a sampling of pets from several New York
City animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for Paws,
Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Animal Haven, Anjellicle Cats Rescue, ASPCA, AC&C,
BARC, Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters, Humane Society of New
York, Husky House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch,
Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue, NYC Siamese
Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Staten Island Council for Animal
Welfare, Stray from the Heart, Tigger Foundation, Arf and Save Kitty.
The afternoon event, sponsored by the ASCPA and Pedigree Food for Dogs,
will also feature an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia. Proceeds
from the auction and other donations received during the day will benefit
the shelters and organizations attending Broadway Barks 10.
For more information call (212) 840-0770, ext. 477, or visit
www.BroadwayBarks.com.
*Peters will also offer a reading from "Broadway Barks," a performance of
"Kramer's Song" and a signing at the Barnes & Noble Lincoln Square in
Manhattan June 12. The free event, which is open to the public, is scheduled
for 10 AM-12 noon.
Peters' "Broadway Barks," which features illustrations by Liz Murphy, was
released in late April on the Blue Apple Books label and boasts a CD
featuring a lively reading of the story by Peters and a lovely song
("Kramer's Song") penned by the Tony-winning Annie Get Your Gun and
Song & Dance star. The charming children's book, the tale of a
down-on-his-luck, yet scrappy dog Kramer, benefits Broadway Barks, the
charitable organization co-founded by Peters and good friend Mary Tyler
Moore over a decade ago.

"My husband & I own a bar &
grille in Bethlehem, PA & we thought it was a great place to host an adopt a
boxer rescue event. We're planning it for Thursday, November 15th in the
evening. The bartender (myself) & server are going to donate all of our tips
from that night to boxer rescue. We are a smaller neighborhood bar (we
legally seat about 60) but it will still help. And it will be nice to
educate people on the benefits of adopting rather than buying a pup from a
breeder or pet store. And Dawn said a volunteer or two in my area will come
out with info & a couple adoptable dogs which will definitely boost
donations."

Animal Shelters And Adoption Agencies
Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore will host the ninth annual
BROADWAY BARKS!, a star-studded dog and cat adopt-a-thon benefiting New
York City animal shelters and adoption agencies. The event, produced by
Broadway Care/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored by the ASPCA with
additional sponsorship by the New York Times, Pedigree, and RCA Small
Wonder will take place on Saturday, July 14th in Shubert Alley (located
between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue). The
festivities begin at 3:30 p.m.; celebrity presentations of pets from
citywide animal shelters will take place between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. (In
the event of rain, BROADWAY BARKS 9! will be rescheduled for Saturday,
July 28 from 3:30p.m. - 6:30p.m.)
Back by "pawpular" demand, BROADWAY BARKS 9! will help many of New York
City's shelter animals find permanent homes by informing New Yorkers
about the plight of the thousands of "homeless" dogs and cats in the
metropolitan area. Last year's BROADWAY BARKS! attracted an audience of
more than 6,000 theater fans, pet owners, and animal lovers, and featured
the participation of more than 24 animal shelters from the New York City
area.
"In 2006, for the first time in New York City's history, the euthanasia
rate for dogs and cats in the city's Animal Care & Control shelters fell
below 50%. A total of 20, 581 animals were placed into homes. 9,313 were
adopted; 9,937 were transferred for eventual adoption to local shelters
and rescue groups; and 1,331 were returned to their owners," said Moore.
"This milestone means we are saving more than half of the dogs and cats
in our city shelters," said Ed Sayres, president & CEO of the ASPCA. "We
are are proud that New York City's efforts to save the lives of adoptable
animals has reached this important benchmark."
Peters, who adopted her dogs, Kramer and Stella, from the ASPCA and AC&C,
adds, "It's bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer have to
euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a
lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping animals
when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal
-- the elevation and continued welfare of animals in our society."
A galaxy of Broadway stars will join Peters and Moore for this special
benefit, presenting the animals for adoption. Celebrity presenters
include Angela Lansbury (Deuce); Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna (Chicago);
David Hyde Pierce, Jason Danieley, Michael McCormick, Debra Monk, and
Karen Ziemba (Curtains); Jerry Mathers and Paul Vogt (Hairspray),
Priscilla Lopez and Mandy Gonzalez (In the Heights); Cheyenne Jackson and
Kerry Butler (Xanadu); Michael Cerveris (LoveMusik); Jo Anne Worley, John
Glover, Beth Leavel, Gerry Vichi and Patrick Wetzel (The Drowsy

BROADWAY BARKS 9! will feature a sampling of potential pets from several

Thanks to
Kim Barnett and the team at Follow My Lead for a wonderful, informative
seminar!
On Sunday, February 18th,
Kim Barnett of Follow My Lead presented another foster home/volunteer
training seminar for Adopt A Boxer Rescue. Just as the previous two, this
one was equally informative and thought-provoking. As skillful as Kim’s
approach and teachings are, her methods are quite basic and simple to
understand and apply. She teaches humans to better understand and
communicate with their dogs and the importance of being the pack leader.
Ivor, her right hand man, is a perfect ambassador for the Boxer breed, and
his contribution to the day and the seminar was especially delightful.
Those who attend Kim’s seminars come away with a
much better insight on how to understand and live a happier life with
their dog, whether there is one dog, or multiple dogs, in the home. Kim
has a love for boxers but of course her expertise is not limited to this
breed. Kim is an outstanding behaviorist and trains all breeds.
We, at Adopt a Boxer Rescue, feel very fortunate
and grateful for all the commitment and assistance Kim and her Follow My
Lead team has shown Adopt A Boxer Rescue.
Kim will be hosting another seminar for AABR in
the Shrewsbury, PA area on March 18th. Set that day aside and see the
events page for details.

A
message from Kim Barnett:
As
the next AABR seminar draws closer, once again I'm filled with excitement
at the prospect of meeting and connecting with more people and making new
friends from this tremendous organization. One of the aims of the day is
to promote and encourage people to foster, though adopters and anyone with
a real interest in making the lives of dogs better is also welcome. This
will be our third seminar together in just a few months and the enthusiasm
in this group just keeps growing; my desire to share information is only
surpassed by your thirst for knowledge: we are truly creating the
ripple effect and I'm filled with pride in every volunteer. Rescue
can be daunting, but together we are proving that over and above placing
dogs in forever homes, we can offer real help in making the transition and
rehabilitation for these dogs and their people a much more fulfilling
experience, leading to fewer dogs coming back into rescue.
Winter is finally upon us, so please drive with care to the seminar. Light
snow is forecast so allow extra time and if you think you'll be late, just
call in and let us know, we'll keep track of you!
The team at Follow My Lead looks forward to a great day with you on
Sunday,
Kim

benefits the dogs we love and care for.
Foster
homes and adoptive homes thinking about adding a member to

presentation. After attending a recent seminar of Kim’s

it all very interesting and fun.
