- Happy Beginning - Follow up on Jimmy now Diesel Story about
Jimmy from PA -Mon, 31 Dec 2007
In March
of 2004, we saw Jimmy on the website. I immediately fell in love with him.
He looked extremely petrified and skinny. From Long Island we drove to
upstate New York to pick Jimmy up. It changed our lives forever.
Jimmy had
grown up on a puppy mill, and had lived on a farm where he was treated very
badly and spent his days and nights lying on the metal part of the cage for
his first two years of life. He was bred with his brothers and sisters. One
day a woman went to adopt a puppy from the farm and saw Jimmy. She brought
him home only to find out that her two other male boxers were very dominant
over him.
I had learned
that she called the adoptaboxerrescue but unfortunately at that time there
were no foster homes available so Jimmy was put in a kennel. Because Jimmy
was so frightened, a cat got near him in the kennel and he stomped on it and
killed it. Here I am thinking "Great. He killed a cat. What am I in
for?" Well thank God I didn't base my decision on that. About 2 days
later one of the volunteers from the adoptaboxerrescue picked Jimmy up from
the kennel and we picked him up that night. We decided to name him Diesel.
Diesel was 69 pounds when we got him. The rescue kept reminding us that he
was a big dog and I was fine with that.
Well, the
first two weeks were smooth and after that Diesel started going to the
bathroom in the house and needed some extra help. He was obviously abused by
a man and was so scared of my husband. I called the rescue and several of
the trainers came over to help us. They were great. It did take some time
but with the help of the volunteers from adoptaboxerrescue, Diesel is happy
and content today. He is a big boy and a mush!! My 2 year old son adores
him and I can't imagine life without him.
At first
we were overwhelmed with the work, but after a short while we were all on
the same page and we're all a big happy family. My advice to anyone out
there, is that adopting an animal requires work. Don't give up. Don't think
adopting a big or older dog isn't worth your time. Today Diesel is around 6
years old and at his last visit at the vet (a month ago) he is a healthy 96
pounds!!!!!!!!!! He is the best dog we could have ever hoped for. I had my
son 8 months after we got Diesel and believe it or not, Diesel became less
nervous after my son was around!!! Today he plays with my husband (which I
can't believe) and they wrestle like boxers do. We are thinking about
getting another boxer but we would need help introducing him to Diesel.
Diesel is so wonderful I would hate to have his personality affected. Don't
get me wrong, Diesel is still nervous (but nothing like he used to be) and
we saved his life!!!!
What a
happy ending for all of us!!

Jimmy the Gentle
Giant.
Jimmy has received a clean bill of health from the Doc.
He is now up to date on vaccines, tested negative for heart worm, and
Lyme, has been neutered and is now ready for his new home. He has
proven to be good with cats, allowing them to rub against him, all the
dogs he has come in contact with, and has really become close with the
vet techs that have been able to do anything at all with him. Jimmy
would do great in a home that understands his need for a calm and
predictable atmosphere. Lots of loud children will scare him half to
death. More than one other dog in the home may be overwhelming to him.
Although Jimmy is a big boy he walks so slow and gentle on lead.
He will make a wonderful best friend someday.

JimmyJimmy is one of
our newest additions.
Like many of our babies his story is
horrific, a common problem rescues all over the country face daily.
Jimmy was born and raised a puppy mill dog, sentenced to live in one of
many cages, kept in an unheated barn like livestock. With his mother,
father, and siblings, they sit crouched tightly in cages just small
enough for them to sit still. Barks and cries echo through the barn
while waiting for their turn to be released from their cells just long
enough to mate and be returned. At last the Amish farmer no longer had
a use for Jimmy. He is one of the lucky ones....he has a chance to
learn what a home and family life can be like. Sadly, his family remain
in that barn waiting for their turn to be saved.
A wonderful family paid to get Jimmy
out. They were not allowed to see the other dogs, and begged to take
Jimmy out of there. After offering the farmer money, they were able to
bring him home. They fostered him while they were able to arrange for
his transport. While in their home they realized the damage that was
done to this poor boy. His soul was numb. He was terrified of every
noise and movement. The tv, the noise of children in the house, a hand
raised too quickly, all sent Jimmy to the floor in terror. Just 2 weeks
into his stay, he learned to play with the other Boxers, was
patient with the children, took food from your hand and even gave a
couple of kisses.
This boy still needs to learn how to
wiggle like a Boxer. He needs to learn what it is like to sleep in bed
with someone who loves him like he is the most wonderful Boxer boy in
the world. He needs to trust that he will never be caged again, and
learn that not all people are cruel and heartless.
If you feel your home is a special one,
ready and willing to take baby steps with this special boy, please fill
out an application and email the volunteers at the bottom of the page. |

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read the
information on our
Adoption Procedures,
then fill out an
online application.
Boxers and Applicants
are not matched on a first come, first served basis.
Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes
between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an
approved applicant, depending
on your personal circumstances and flexibility.
Matching Boxers suitable for placement
with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special
needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review
time and adoption time.
And yes, we
realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted
before you're approved. Should your first choices all ready
found their forever home, we want you to advise
us as to other dogs you are interested in at
Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com . Or let
us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.
That is what we are good at. And be happy for the
ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many
fantastic dogs waiting in their place.
Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful
Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a
Boxer.
We hope you feel that
the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
